SHIN HYE SUNG (real name Jung Pil Kyo, 43) was sentenced to two years in prison for driving another person’s vehicle while intoxicated and refusing to take a breathalyzer test by police.

In a trial held in Seoul’s Eastern District Sole Court on the morning of April 6, the prosecution requested a two-year prison sentence for SHIN HYE SUNG, accused of violating traffic laws (refusal to measure alcohol) and illegally using a car.

SHIN HYE SUNG‘s lawyer said, “He has been a member of the Shinhwa group for 25 years, and he suffers from panic disorder, interpersonal avoidance and depression. Since 2021, the symptoms have worsened, so he does not drink. Although he suffers from serious mental illness, he was afraid of being recognized by the public, so he did not receive proper care. He met an acquaintance (on the day of the incident) and he drank after many years.” The lawyer pointed out that he does not normally drink or drive.

Regarding the allegations of illegal use of a vehicle, the defendant said: “I took it for my own car and got in. I didn’t want to use someone else’s car without authorization. I have agreed with the owner of the vehicle who does not wish to be punished.” He explained that his refusal to take a breathalyzer test was also motivated by the sudden demand for this measure.

SHIN HYE SUNG, who entered the court upon arrival, saying only, “I’m sorry,” acknowledged all the charges and evidence filed by her in this trial and said, “I’m sorry to disappoint many people. I will reflect on myself so that this never happens again” and apologized in tears.

The date for SHIN HYE SUNG‘s first trial has been set for April 20.
