SEVENTEEN continues to make waves in the global music industry with its success on IFPI‘s 2023 album chart.
SEVENTEEN (consisting of S.Coups, Jeonghan, Joshua, Jun, Hoshi, Wonwoo, Woozi, The8, Mingyu, DK, Seungkwan, Vernon, and Dino) ascended to the top of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry‘s (IFPI) 2023 global album chart, solidifying its significant position in the global music market.
According to IFPI‘s 2023 global album chart, released on February 27th, 2024, SEVENTEEN‘s mini-album “FML” claimed the number one spot. This achievement surpassed albums that achieved great success on major global charts such as Billboard last year, such as Morgan Wallen’s “OONE THING AT A TIME” and Taylor Swift’s “MIDNIGHTS” and “1989 (Taylor’s Version)“.
After debuting in the top 10 of this chart with its fourth album “FACE THE SUN” in 2022 (7th place), SEVENTEEN reached the summit in just one year. Additionally, its eleventh mini-album “SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN” also ranked 8th in the 2023 global album chart, allowing SEVENTEEN to place two albums in the top 10.
IFPI, with over 8,000 record label members worldwide, annually publishes a list of industry trends. Among these, the “Global Album Chart” combines physical album sales, digital track downloads, and audio-video streaming figures to rank albums, making it an objective indicator of the best-selling albums worldwide in that year.
SEVENTEEN set a record by selling over 16 million albums in the past year, positioning itself as the “top K-pop group”. The group achieved this position with the mini-albums “FML” and “SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN“. Released in April last year, “FML” sold over 6.27 million copies, setting a new sales record for a K-pop solo album. “SEVENTEENTH HEAVEN” became the first album in K-pop history to surpass 5 million copies sold in one week.
Louis Morrison, director of IFPI‘s Global Album Chart, said :
“I am delighted to present this year’s IFPI Global Album Award to ‘FML‘, which achieved incredible performances worldwide. SEVENTEEN continues to push boundaries in its concepts, performances, and talents.”
He added, “Congratulations to SEVENTEEN and all CARATs worldwide.“
SEVENTEEN‘s success, selling over 10 million albums in a year and becoming a K-pop icon, is attributed to the musical quality of its productions and the unique storytelling of its team. The group expanded its spectrum by embracing genres ranging from old-school hip-hop (“F*ck my life“) to alternative jersey club (“손오공” (“Super”)) to soul punk (“음악의 신” (“God Of Music”)), with a harmonious fusion of synthetic sounds and brass. These self-produced hits, composed, written, and produced by the members themselves, align with SEVENTEEN‘s growth narrative, described as “unwavering energy even in extreme situations.”
SEVENTEEN is expanding its global popularity with world tours. Last year, the group interacted with over a million spectators in 23 performances, including national fan meetings “SEVENTEEN in CARAT LAND” and Japanese fan meetings “SEVENTEEN 2023 JAPAN FANMEETING ‘LOVE’’’, as well as the “SEVENTEEN TOUR ‘FOLLOW’” worldwide tour.
Additionally, SEVENTEEN will host an encore tour titled “SEVENTEEN TOUR ‘FOLLOW’ AGAIN” at the Incheon Asia Main Stadium on March 30-31, the Yanmar Stadium Nagai in Osaka on May 18-19, and the Nissan Stadium in Kanagawa on May 25-26.
