Yesterday, Friday April 12, ATEEZ performed at the legendary Coachella festival in Indio, California.
ATEEZ, composed of its eight members HONGJOONG, SEONGHWA, YUNHO, YEOSANG, SAN, MINGI, WOOYOUNG and JONGHO, officially made history this Friday (April 12) by becoming the first ever K-Pop boy group to perform at the « Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival », named Coachella. Coachella is an American music festival which was created in 1999 and which has a certain international reputation. Indeed, the festival is one of the largest and most important festivals in the United States.
ATEEZ was announced in the festival program on January 17 on the official festival networks. The group’s name is among the big names on the international music scene such as Lana Del Rey, Lil Uzi Vert, Tyler The Creator, Doja Cat and J Balvin. An announcement that created a reaction not only from the ATINYs (name of the fandom) but also from the community of K-Pop fans in general. The group has been announced for two dates, Friday April 12th and 20th.
While Coachella generally welcomes artists from the musical genres of rock, electronic music or hip-hop, the festival has only very recently opened up to the world of K-Pop. Indeed, BLACKPINK was the first (girl) K-Pop group to perform on the Coachella stage in 2019. Thus, ATEEZ in turn marked the history of K-Pop by becoming the first boy K-Pop group to do so.
About 6 years ago, ATEEZ made its official debut in the Sahara Desert in Morocco, with the music video for its debut track « Pirate King » filmed there. And yesterday, ATEEZ performed at 10:45 p.m. local time on one of the Coachella stages called « SAHARA », reminding the group of its long journey to get here. The group made a rather impressive and remarkable entrance on stage after a visual intro introducing each member on the large LED screens. The audience present that day was treated to an original and electric setlist, perfectly representing the energy and universe of ATEEZ. Indeed, the group appeared under a red light starting its performance with its famous song « Say My Name ».
HONGJOONG, leader of ATEEZ, took the opportunity to express his sincere feelings:
The first time we came to Los Angeles was about 6 years ago, we were practicing like crazy in a tiny little studio to get a chance to debut. They say “dream big” but I don’t think I’ve ever imagined being here Coachella!
ATEEZ performed other of its iconic musics such as « HALA HALA », « GUERRILLA (Flag Version) », « Crazy Form », « ROCKY » and « The Real ». The group also gave way to theatrical performances with their tracks « ARRIBA » and « DJANGO », giving the local audience a taste of what ATEEZ was able to offer its fans for the first time during its world tour « TOWARDS THE LIGHT: WILL TO POWER ». Finally, ATEEZ successfully completed their first stage (about an hour) at Coachella by performing « BOUNCY (K-HOT CHILLI PEPPERS) » and « WONDERLAND (Symphony No.9) » under green lighting.
Finally, ATEEZ will perform again on the « SAHARA » stage at Coachella on April 20.
