JUN HAN, member of JYP Entertainment’s group XDINARY HEROES, apologized following remarks related to eugenic ideas.
On June 29, JUN HAN posted on XDINARY HEROES’ official social media: “I sincerely apologize for the pain and discomfort my careless words have caused many people.”
He added, “I realized my comments reflected biased views and I am reflecting deeply on this. I humbly apologize to everyone who was hurt or offended by my lack of historical knowledge, social awareness, and sensitivity. Going forward, I am committed to continuous learning so I can act with proper knowledge. This incident has made me more cautious with my words and actions and take responsibility.”
Previously, JUN HAN had a conversation with a fan on a communication platform discussing research topics. He asked questions like, “PCR genetic amplification technology is fascinating. Can we amplify only the good genes to cure a disease? It’s said that Black people have more ear cells, which improves hearing and therefore musical talent, which I was jealous of. Is that possible?”
He also mentioned the idea of “combining racial advantages,” referring to white metabolic abilities, Asian and Indian physical and intellectual abilities, while noting stem cell research was already ongoing despite ethical concerns, stating those who find it immoral should not do it, but those who want to may do so with consent and respect.
However, the phrase “combining racial advantages” sparked controversy, with some accusing him of supporting eugenics — a theory by British anthropologist Francis Galton advocating preserving superior genes and eliminating inferior ones.
In response to the controversy, JUN HAN apologized, followed by his agency JYP Entertainment, which said: “We sincerely apologize to everyone hurt by JUN HAN’s careless remarks on the fan communication platform. JUN HAN is taking this matter very seriously and deeply regrets the pain and disappointment caused by his thoughtless words.”
JYP Entertainment also acknowledged shortcomings in their artist training and pledged to be more vigilant to prevent recurrence, educating their artists thoroughly on social awareness, sensitivity, and respectful public communication to present a mature image with proper values.
