SIGNAL : An interview with a “French touch”.

KSTATION TV met with group SIGNAL, through our journalist and reporter Anaïs .

First, a small presentation of SIGNAL (시그널). It is a rookie group under JStar Entertainment, consisting of four members: BOKEUN (leader), YOUNGHO (vocalist), GIHWAN (rapper) et KYUHWAN (vocalist) .

We meet them for an interview around a table, at a restaurant in Seoul, so that they feel at ease to speak with us and we can learn a little more about each member .

This interview begins with the group’s greeting, before we move on to a quick photoshoot. Once gathered around the table, the members introduce themselves and tell us about their hobbies: watching videos on Youtube and playing football for BOKEUN; watching movies and going to the cinema alone for GIHWAN; traveling and driving for YOUNGHO and finally, for KYUHWAN, eating alone at night and spending time with the members .

For them, the group differs from others in its cohesion and teamwork. By asking them how this desire to become a singer came, each member answered with an open heart :

BOKEUN: by watching musical broadcasts on television as a child, he started wanting to participate in auditions to become a singer.
GIHWAN: having started dance in elementary school, he finally went on stage for the first time during a festival at his school, to show his abilities. He liked so much the sensation he felt at that moment that he wanted to pursue an artistic career afterwards.
YOUNGHO: like BOKEUN, watching television made him want to become a singer.
KYUHWAN: as a fan of BIG BANG since middle school, it was Taeyang who inspired him to become a singer. He then began studying music when he entered high school. Later he confides that his favorite song is “Fuck it” (BIGBANG)

The name SIGNAL means that the group wishes to send a signal of love to those who listen to it. However, the members reveal that it was not the name initially chosen for the group, but instead NEW MOON: for the ephemeral aspect of a night and its clarity. Or else VIKING, to adopt a tougher and masculine image.

Afterwards, the boys look back on their debut in Japan last year. A really good way for them to prepare more comfortably their debut in Korea, which took place this week with the title “Down for you (너더운)” .

In order to delve a little deeper into the intimacy of the group, we asked everyone to reveal a defect and quality of another member .

BOKEUN describing KYUHWAN: his main quality is his height (he is 187cm tall). But it is also his defect because, at his side, the leader feels too small, like a kid. Apart from that, he does not seem to have a negative point.
GIHWAN describing BOKEUN: his main quality is his beauty. He considers that the leader has a face that everyone can easily love. But he also takes too long to wash, wanting to make sure he is clean.
YOUNGHO describing GIHWAN: he considers that he dances very well, even better than himself, so it makes him want to train even more. Nevertheless, the rapper of the group can express, by moment, too much confidence in him, which is judged as being a negative point by the vocalist.
KYUHWAN describing YOUNGHO: despite having a very developed sense of humor, this one procrastinates too much, while being a composer for the group. He even refuses to clean in the dorm

Then, GIHWAN explains that their model is WINNER because it is, like SIGNAL, a group composed of four members. In addition, he tells us that he is happy when he listens to their songs. As for KYUHWAN, his model is the French soccer player Mbappé, who is very popular in Korea. As a manner of fact, the young member wanted to become a soccer in his childhood .

About their life together in the dorm. YOUNGHO assumes the role of the grandfather, because he is the laziest and complains regularly, especially when he wakes up. KYUHWAN plays the role of the mother, being the one who reprimands the members the most; mainly YOUNGHO when he does not clean. BOKEUN is the father and the one who does the cleaning most of the time. And, finally, GIHWAN is the baby of the dorm: even if he is not the youngest of the group, he always asks questions on diverse and varied life subjects .

Thus, the members reveal the following secret: although they want to have a “clean” image as a group, they actually often leave trash at home and few people tidy up or clean .

We then ask them to plunge back into their memories, to return to the most memorable moment of their career, since their debuts last year in Japan :

BOKEUN: his career as a singer is only good memories, but for him, the most important was the debut of the group in Korea, on the set of Show Champion. KYUHWAN mentions the same moment.
YOUNGHO: when he receives the approval of the members when he writes new songs before their release .

“For me it was amazing to work on the release of the album with the other members. We shared good and bad times together .”

Then, they tell us what profession they would have liked to do when they were a kid :

KYUHWAN : he wanted to be a soccer player and, even today, he still does a lot of sports. Especially soccer, of course, but his desire to be a singer has become stronger than anything.
BOKEUN : in spite of having a lot of hobbies, like soccer and art, singing is what he always liked the most, just like YOUNGHO.
GIHWAN : he wanted to become a model because he was passionate about fashion, but his heights did not fit, so he immersed himself in dance

As well as their favorite artist and movie :

KYUHWAN: Taeyang from BIG BANG is his favorite singer since he was little and the drama « Discovery of Love » is his favorite for the story and the OST.
GIHWAN: his model is BTS and his favorite film, which he recommends to anyone who has not seen it yet, is « About Time ».
YOUNGHO : he is particularly fond of the Marvel movies, including the « Avengers » serie

“I like Justin Bieber and I do not really have a favorite movie style because I like all genres .”
BOKEUN

About a possible coming to France, KYUHWAN says he would like to go see the Eiffel Tower, while GIHWAN wants to taste the hexagon specialties, including macaroons and croque-monsieur. YOUNGHO adds that he intends to learn about France and reveals he would like to go to Europe .

Finally, KYUHWAN concludes the interview by asking the French fans to look forward for the group in the future, hoping that it will be known .

The interview comes to an end as the members enjoy some croissants and deliver a last message to fans: YOUNGHO asks to give a lot of love to their first album “THE FIRST SIGNAL: BEGINS” and to follow the group’s activities in the future, until one day they also come to Europe and France .
