We are January 16th in South Korea, so it is the birthday of SEUNGKWAN, member of the group SEVENTEEN. It’s a large group, so I suggest you discover a little more each member through these portraits.
The member in the spotlight today is SEUNGKWAN, the singer and singer with the emotional voice of the group.
SEUNGKWAN was born on January 16th, 1998, so he is one of the younger members, which often surprises as he has a rather mature physique and character, he is very caring and treats the younger ones like little brothers. He is from Jeju Island and is very proud of it.
He is a sensitive boy, who was very pampered by his mother for whom he has boundless admiration and his two sisters. SEUNGKWAN is very emotional when he finds his mother after the long separations, he still cries without restraint. He loves romances and sentimental songs, he watches many dramas and shares his favorites with fans. He would like to be a dad someday because he loves taking care of children, he finds them adorable and said he would like a girl because they are cuter.
He really likes ballads (especially those of Adèle and Beyonce) but also Kpop. Having been a real fan of the group WONDER GIRLS (a Wonderful) as a teenager, he truly understands his fans and never misses an opportunity to introduce them to the kpop of the years 2000-2010.
That sums up his personality a bit, now let’s move on to the artist side of SEUNGKWAN.
He joined Pledis Entertainment around 2011. Singing has always been his passion, after several competitions during his elementary school years and early college, SEUNGKWAN auditioned at Pledis Entertainment.
He trained hard with several other trainees for 4 years. He appeared on the group’s pre-debut reality show: “SEVENTEEN TV” where he was among the most outgoing and loud members … He finally managed to debut with the group on May 26th, 2015 as lead vocalist, alongside DK.
His voice is recognized throughout the industry as one of the most beautiful of his generation, CHEN from the group EXO even mentioned him as one of his favorite 3rd generation singers.
SEUNGKWAN is also highly regarded by the general public for his humor and he appears regularly on many Korean shows. In 2018 he received the “Rookie Award of MBC Entertainment Awards”. However, at times some people found him to be too prominent in the band, and he is almost more known to the general public for his appearances on shows than for his singing skills. But for some time now, he has withdrawn a bit and keeps saying that he is a singer before being a “comedian”.
Even if his level in English is far from perfect, SEUNGKWAN very often tries to speak English and he goes to great lengths to be able to communicate with his international fans, because this weakness in language is one of his regrets, like not not know how to play the piano.
In the group, in addition to his talent, SEUNGKWAN is seen as the number 1 fan of SEVENTEEN. The members are very important to him, he often cried when he could not dance or sing and it affected the osmosis of the group, he takes care of everyone’s well-being and is always afraid that his strong character might harm him their harmony.
The covers of SEUNGKWAN’s ballads are numerous and all memorable, they give chills and are appreciated by the public as well as by professionals. One of them had a completely different effect though, in 2019 it went viral thanks to their YOON JONG SHIN cover of “Wifi“; in this song the soundtrack imitates a bad Wifi connection and SEUNGKWAN with his only voice was capable of the same sound rendering.
During a Goofy show, a lady exclaimed when she saw him, “Oh you sing the WIFI”.
In short, SEUNGKWAN is therefore a very sensitive boy attached to the group, a singing enthusiast who hides a real treasure in his vocal cords and a very funny boy appreciated by everyone. He has a lot of humor and self-deprecation, which hides his insecurities behind his clown mask.
