CHOI SEUNG HYUN
Mistakes die hard, between online community and streaming giant, how is it going to happen?

BIGBANG former member TOP (Choi Seung Hyun) faces controversy as he was named in the lineup for “Squid Game 2.” Audiences are paying close attention to the fact that he, who has a history of cannabis inhalation suspension, has been cast in Season 2 of the anticipated global movie “Squid Game.”
On June 29, Netflix revealed the lineup for the original series “Squid Game 2.” This includes various main characters, including Park Kyu-Young, Cho Yu-Ri, Kang Ae-sim, Lee Da-wit, Lee Jin-Wook, CHOI SEUNG-HYUN, Roh Jae-Won, and Won Ji-An. They are said to have finished reading the script on the 23rd with Lee Jung-Jae, Lee Byung-Hun, Wi Ha-Jun, Gong Yoo and Yim Si-Wan, Kang Ha-Neul, Park Sung-Hoon and Yang Dong- Geun, who was previously known for the first release of the lineup.

But the problem is that this lineup includes TOP, a former drug inmate. TOP enlisted as a military man in 2017 but went on trial while serving in the military in 2016 after he was belatedly accused of smoking cannabis at home. As a result, he was sentenced to 10 months in prison and two years probation at a sentencing trial in July 2017. Since then, his military position was waived and he completed his military service in as a social worker. In February last year, he left the group after his exclusive contract with YG Entertainment expired.
Since then, TOP has hinted that he will retire from the entertainment industry, saying he has no intention of returning. TOP said, “Take it easy.” When a netizen said, “Don’t come back,” he replied, “I don’t plan to either. I still feel sorry for my fans. I won’t return to Korea. I don’t want to return,” expressing his willingness to retire. However, he recently announced that he is working on his solo album, “STILL MAKING MY ALBUMS”.
Controversy continues online as TOP, who looks back on his retirement, is listed in the lineup of “Squid Game 2“, which grabs everyone’s attention. Earlier, TOP was recognized for his acting skills by winning awards at various award ceremonies for his performances in the movies “Tazza-The hidden card”, “71: Into the fire” and “Commitment”. However, amid the recent increase in drug cases in the entertainment industry, netizens are wondering whether it is right to cast TOP, who has committed related crimes, in “Squid Game 2“. In particular, Netflix temporarily postponed the movie’s release due to the lawsuit of Yoo Ah-In, who wrapped filming for “The Match” movie and “Goodbye earth” series. Nevertheless, “it is ‘ironic’ that they chose TOP, a former drug user”, declares the Internet users.
Of course, TOP, who was sentenced to 10 months in prison and two years of probation, has no problem returning legally. However, audiences, who have seen drug convicts return after a period of soul-searching, are also giving TOP a dim view. Even though they have a period of self-reflection, their mistakes will not be erased. Attention is focused on whether “Squid Game 2“, which includes TOP, will be loved again after overcoming negative public opinion.
Meanwhile, “Squid Game” Season 1 caused a syndrome by recording the most watch time in Netflix history. Director Hwang Dong Hyuk won the Emmy Award for Best Director, and actor Lee Jung Jae won the Emmy Award for Best Actor for the drama.
Filming for “Squid Game” Season 2 is scheduled for the second half of this year.
