The 2023 MTV EMA were canceled in the wake of the Israeli-Palestinian war.
The MTV Europe Music Awards 2023 (hereinafter referred to as MTV EMA 2023), the largest music awards ceremony in Europe, announced on its official channel on October 19 (local time): “We have decided not to proceed to the MTV EMA 2023 due to unstable situation in the world.”
“We thought about the safety of countless singers, staff and fans around the world who might attend the event. Given the shocking events in Israel and Palestine that have not been resolved, we felt that This was not the time for the whole world to rejoice.”
Outside of the event, voting is still ongoing and the winners of each category will receive the MTV EMA award.
Among Korean singers, BTS’s JUNGKOOK was nominated in three categories in total, including “Best K-Pop” and “Biggest fans”, as well as in the “Best Song” category with his solo single “Seven (feat. Lato)” released in July. This is the new record for the most nominations among Korean artists. Additionally, JUNGKOOK was named Artist of the Year.
“MTV EMA” is an awards ceremony organized by MTV Network Europe, which recognizes popular songs, music videos and singers who represented the year in Europe. This year’s awards ceremony was scheduled to take place in Paris on the 5th of next month, but was canceled.
