Chinese police have issued a statement regarding rumors claiming that KRIS WU (Wu Yifan), former member of EXO, had died in prison.
Recently, several Chinese-language media outlets circulated rumors that KRIS WU had passed away in detention, sparking significant interest in the veracity of these claims.
An individual, “A”, claiming to be a “cellmate of KRIS WU“, stated on social media that KRIS WU was “killed for failing to meet the demands of a local gang.”
In response to growing speculation, including suspicions of “organ harvesting”, Chinese authorities intervened. The Jiangsu Public Security Department stated on its official account that these were “completely unfounded rumors.”
KRIS WU, who debuted in 2012 as a member of EXO, filed a lawsuit two years later to nullify his exclusive contract with SM ENTERTAINMENT, but he lost.
He then moved to China to continue his career, before becoming involved in a scandal in 2021 when his sexual crimes against minors were revealed. He allegedly sexually assaulted 24 victims, including Zhang Dansan, a former member of the Chinese group SNH48.
The Chinese court ultimately sentenced KRIS WU to 11 years and 6 months in prison for rape, as well as 1 year and 10 months for participating in collective obscene acts.
