Since his debut, SHINee member KEY (real name KIM KIBUM), who had carried out his activities without incident, has issued a direct apology regarding the so-called “injection aunt” controversy and announced his withdrawal from all activities.
On December 17, KEY posted on his social media: “I sincerely apologize to everyone for the concern caused recently by various stories concerning me.” He added: “I have been troubled and confused by facts I recently discovered, and I am sorry for not being able to clarify my position quickly or announce as soon as possible how I would act in the future.”
On the same day, SM ENTERTAINMENT, KEY’s agency, released an official statement to explain the development of the controversy.
SM ENTERTAINMENT specified: “KEY visited a medical facility located in the Gangnam district on a recommendation from an acquaintance, where he first met Mr. Lee, whom he considered a doctor, and continued to receive care at this hospital.” The agency continued: “In situations where it was difficult to visit the hospital, home consultations took place a few times, but at that time, KEY thought Mr. Lee was a doctor and no particular mention was made, so he did not perceive any problem.”
The agency added: “It was only recently, following controversies over Mr. Lee’s medical license, that we learned he was not a doctor. KEY is reflecting deeply on his ignorance and, aware of the seriousness of the situation, has decided to withdraw from scheduled programs and events.”
Online, the controversy had intensified after the person nicknamed “injection aunt” posted photos of KEY’s dog on her social media and past private exchanges with KEY were revealed.
Furthermore, KEY had donated 50 million won to GYEONGBUK NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL earlier this year and had previously supported the treatment costs of sick children. Influenced by his mother, a nurse, he engaged in acts of giving, which were reported as commendable and touching actions.
