The singer PSY (Park Jae-sang), who received prescriptions for psychotropic drugs without an in-person consultation and had them picked up by proxy through his manager and others, has finally been referred to the prosecution.

The Seodaemun Police Station in Seoul announced on June 2 that it had referred a total of 6 people involved, including the singer PSY, a professor at a university hospital who prescribed the medication, and the manager of his agency, to the prosecution without detention on the 29th of last month for violation of the Medical Act.
According to the police, PSY is accused of receiving prescriptions for psychotropic drugs, “Xanax” and “Stilnox”, without a direct consultation at a university hospital in Seoul between 2022 and last year, and of having these medications picked up by a third party, notably his manager.
Under the current Medical Act, a prescription can only be written by a physician who has directly examined the patient, and the collection of a prescription by a third party other than the patient who received the direct examination is strictly limited. In particular, “Xanax” and “Stilnox” prescribed to PSY are psychotropic drugs used to treat sleep disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression, and due to their highly addictive and habit-forming nature, the principle of a prescription through an in-person consultation is mandatory.
This case began with a police investigation after receiving a report on the matter last summer. At the time the controversy broke out, PSY‘s agency, P NATION, had acknowledged the facts and apologized through an official statement in August of last year, stating: “The fact of having picked up sleeping pills, which are prescription-only medications, by proxy is a clear mistake and negligence.”
The police, having judged after about a year of investigation that the charges of violating the Medical Act against them were proven, referred the case to the prosecution with an opinion for indictment.
