BTS: Number 1 in the IFPI ranking
This Thursday, March 4th, 2021 marks the announcement of the IFPI ranking, grouping together the artists who have sold the most albums in 2020.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) is an international organization whose mission is to ensure that the copyright of the phonographic record industry is respected throughout the world. This organization was created in 1933 and since 1996 has awarded platinum certifications to albums that have sold at least 1 million copies in Europe. In addition to these certifications, an annual ranking brings together the 10 international artists who have sold the most albums internationally in a year. The artist who tops this ranking is rewarded by being awarded the Global Recording Artist of the Year award. This award is given based on the global career of an artist or group. Different points are taken into account for this ranking, in particular physical and digital sales as well as streams (listening to music on streaming platforms).
It is therefore this Thursday, March 4th that the organization unveiled on its social networks the 10 artists included in the Global Recording Artist of the Year Award 2020 ranking. BTS is thus the winner this year. The group had, in the past, already been in second place in 2018 and in seventh place in 2019. This victory is therefore a first for their careers.
In addition, by being winner of the Global Recording Artist of the Year of the Year 2020, BTS becomes the first Korean (and Asian in general) artist to win this distinction. The group is also the first laureate to perform in a language other than English, in fact the first non-English speaking artist to obtain this place.
Frances Moore, Executive Director of IFPI, spoke on the victory saying, “BTS is a global phenomenon. They had a great New Year releasing three albums and continually finding creative and engaging ways to share their story with the world. They really show the power that music has to bring joy and happiness to people all over the world. We would like to congratulate RM, JIN, SUGA, J-HOPE, JIMIN, V and JUNGKOOK and we are delighted to see what they have in store. ”
This announcement comes shortly with the American ceremony that are the GRAMMYs and for which BTS is nominated in the category “Best Pop Duo / Goup Performance”. This ceremony aims to honor the best artists in the musical world each year, it is one of the most prestigious and important ceremonies in the life of an artist. Will BTS‘s artistic journey during the year 2020 allow the group to win this prize?
