Today MINPYO of B.I.G (for BOYS IN GROOVE) celebrates his 27th birthday. (Re)discover this talented rapper for this special day.
MINPYO whose real name is GOOK MINPYO, has an unusual name in South Korea. Ranked No. 1 “idols with the most unique name” by Mnet‘s TMI NEWS program, the name GOOK MINPYO literally means “People’s choice” in Korean.
And MINPYO‘s name suits him well: B.I.G is one of the most popular K-pop band in the Arabic countries nowadays, especially since their cover of the song “3 Daqat“
MINPYO was born in Gwangju City, South Korea on November 15, 1994. He started dancing and singing lessons at the famous Joy Dance & Plug In Music Academy in Gwangju, where he also met and befriended GUNMIN, another B.I.G member.
Unlike the popular belief, MINPYO didn’t start his idol career with B.I.G. Before joining his current company, GH Entertainment, GOOK MINPYO was a trainee at Stardom Entertainment, in the sub-unit Under Dogg of TOPP DOGG group. After leaving Stardom Entertainment, MINPYO joined B.I.G as lead rapper in 2014 alongside J-HOON, BENJI, GUNMIN and HEEDO. He was revealed to the public with B.I.G‘s debut single “Hello“, in which he made a great impression with his powerful rap.
While the MINPYO on stage is charismatic and has a powerful rap, the MINPYO backstage behaves in a totally different way: rather calm and charming with his smiles, you’ll never see him wearing extravagant outfits. In a 2014 interview, he commented:
“I think I suit colorless colors the most. My wardrobe is mostly of white, grey and black clothes”.

If MINPYO‘s clothes are mostly black and white, his drawings are instead full of colours. Inspired by animals, tattoos and patterns, MINPYO has a very unique drawing style, and he shares his passion daily with his fans.
Along his passion for drawing comes his passion for the Seventh art. MINPYO is an avid film lover, especially of Korean dramas. He had the chance to make his acting debut in 2018 in the web drama “My Melody“, in which he played a robot.
With his gift for drawing, rap and acting, MINPYO is an artistically accomplished person. Recently, the singer opened a TikTok account where he lets his creativity run free through dance videos, challenges and more.
