MIYEON of girl group (G)I-DLE makes her solo debut on Wednesday April 27 with a first mini-album titled “MY”.

In order to present this album, her agency, CUBE ENTERTAINMENT, prepared a press conference in Seoul, but before that, a brunch with the journalists to meet the young woman in person. The brunch is being held at a trendy restaurant near the Hongdae district, and only a handful of reporters were able to attend before the start of the conference. The singer takes some pictures with them, and lunch can begin. Journalists compare MIYEON to an angel, as her appearance is angelic with her long white dress and blond hair. The conference is also held in the restaurant, on a different floor so that journalists who did not attend the brunch can find a place. MIYEON then goes up on a stage to present her first mini-album, carried by the title “Drive”, as well as five other titles accompanying it.
The conference begins with the broadcast of the clip of “Drive”, which is intended to be sober, like the music with soft sounds. The young singer is surrounded by flowers and proclaims “I’m fine”. MIYEON then joins the MC and expresses her joy to see so many journalists having come to discover her first album, which she claims to have prepared hard. She explains that the title of the album, “MY” represents both the initials of her first name, and “me”, to say that this album and its songs truly represent her.
“The first song on the album, “Rose”, refers directly to my first name since the syllable “Mi” refers to roses. This song is like a flower blooming”. – MIYEON
She then approaches the title song, which is like a moment of comfort during hard times, in order to tell herself that nothing is insurmountable and that in the end, we are fine. She is delighted to be able to convey such a message for her solo debut, and recommends a passage of the song where she addresses an interlocutor, to tell him that he too can go as well as her. The goal is therefore to convey hope and strength to anyone listening to this title.
The third track, “Softly” has an R&B funk genre, in order to represent the feeling experienced on a calm rainy day, which calms us down. The songs “Te amo” follow, focusing on falling in love and the feeling of power, as if we could move mountains, which assails us. MIYEON thinks this song will appeal to her fans the most, as it is a way to convey her love to them. Then, we find “Charging”, which is a title in collaboration with JUNNY, a solo singer from the MAUVE COMPANY. The ending song is “소나기” which reminds her of childhood when she spent hours watching dramas. She also wrote the lyrics of this track, in order to appropriate it more.
“I think the best time to listen to this album is while running, to get a sense of freedom and escape” – MIYEON
After presenting this first album individually, another clip is broadcast, in order to present the choreography of the song, and to hear him sing “live”. The filming took place at the top of a building, on a helicopter landing strip, reinforcing the feeling of freedom since we see Seoul as far as the eye can see, as well as its emblem, the Namsan Tower. It is also the first time that the young woman has discovered this version of “Drive”, and is delighted with the rendering of the video. She says she really liked this shoot, because she was captivated by Seoul, and was not afraid of heights. Then comes the time to answer questions from journalists. We ask her first of all what she thinks is the particular charm of this album, and she answers with passion that it is an album representing her since she had the opportunity to write texts, to approach themes close to his heart, and to calmly prepare his debut. She adds that she received the support of the other members of (G)I-DLE, who greatly appreciated this album.
“I wanted to show another side of me solo, getting closer to the style of OST to stand out from my group”. – MIYEON
Indeed, during the last comeback of the group, the concept was “badass”, which is far from the delicate and fresh concept of “MY”. These debuts therefore represent a challenge, because she does not know how they will be perceived. As for the preparation for the debut, she did it during the group’s comeback promotion period, but admits that she had no difficulty combining the two. On the contrary, she found it rather amusing to mix musical styles like this. She also compares the involvement of the members, since SOYEON is in charge of writing lyrics for (G)I-DLE, while there, MIYEON was able to write her own lyrics for “소나기”. She was able to put herself in SOYEON’s shoes and realized how complicated writing a song could be and is more grateful for SOYEON’s hard work.

The young woman selected the song “Drive” as the title track because she was the one with the message she most wanted to convey around her. Even though she is the lead vocalist in her group, she worked just as hard for her solo debut, to make sure she showed the best image of herself possible. She is grateful for the support she received when her solo debut was announced by the group’s fans, and hopes that fans will view this debut album as a gift to them. Finally, she considers that the reason for the success of the group’s latest comeback, with “Tomboy”, is the feeling of identification that young people can have when listening to the title. She therefore wanted this feeling to be felt when listening to “Drive”. After a few years on stage, she does not consider that anything has changed since her debut.
In fact, she regularly chats with the band members over the past five years, and all of them are amazed at how quickly time has passed. Also, as two years were impacted by COVID, the band couldn’t experience a “normal” career start, like so many other bands. To conclude on her debut, MIYEON hopes that she will receive a lot of love for “Drive” and the other tracks on the album. She hopes to find her place in the music charts, and plans to launch a choreography challenge on social networks to share this period of promotion with her fans. It is with these last words that this press conference ends, the cheerful young woman thanking all the journalists who came.

The words of our reporter: “MIYEON seems to have found a style that suits her, in order to stand out from her group. Congratulations on her debut.”
