PSY‘s clip for “Gangnam Style” surpassed 3.5 billion views on YouTube on January 26th. Seven years have passed since its unveiling in July 2012, but the myth of “Gangnam Style” is still going on.
The video for “Gangnam Style“, released in July 2012, triggered a “horse dance” syndrome while parody videos were posted on YouTube. It enjoyed worldwide popularity with over 500 million views within 100 days of its release.
With “Gangnam Style”, PSY set the first record in South Korea, including # 2 on the main Billboard charts “HOT100” for seven consecutive weeks, # 1 on the chart of American iTunes video clips and winning the “2012 American Music Awards” New Media Awards.
PSY even changed the YouTube system. In 2015, the YouTube and Google division increased the maximum number of views set to 2.1 billion, opening up a new record for “Gangnam Style“.
