The actress KANG MINA, who sparked keen interest with the Netflix series “기리고 (If wishes could kill)”, revealed for the first time her preparation process for her role as a possessed person through an exclusive interview with the fashion magazine “SINGLES”.
“기리고 (If wishes could kill)” tells the story of high school students whose friendship and trust break because of the curse of a mobile phone application that grants wishes, and who each struggle on their own to lift this curse. Nari, played by KANG MINA, is a character possessed by a ghost, whose acting essentially resided in the alternation between human and spirit.
Stopping entertainment shows and romances, only horror for 3 months KANG MINA unveiled her rigorous preparation process by stating:
“During the filming of “기리고 (If wishes could kill)”, I watched neither entertainment shows nor romances, I watched only horror works”.
She added: “Originally, I am afraid of watching horror movies, but I did research to take inspiration from pupil movements in movies like “THE SUBSTANCE””.
In particular, she confided having practiced relentlessly even at home: “I practiced moving only my eyes and lips while lying down like a ghost, and I filmed myself to see how it appeared on camera”. The passion of the actress, who feared horror movies but immersed herself in the horrific genre for three months for her character, is causing a sensation.
She chose as the most difficult scene “the scene in the hideout where I almost killed the protagonist Se-a and where this friend faints and collapses”. Recalling this moment, she explained: “I had to laugh while crying. A mix of feelings between the sadness of Nari and the joy of the ghost had to be expressed”, adding:
“I said it was too difficult, that I wouldn’t be able to do it, but the director told me to try, that I could do it, and when I finally got the “OK” in just two takes, I really felt like I was coming back to life”.
Becoming close to Jeon So Young, she rather “kept her distance on purpose” KANG MINA, who played a relationship of tense confrontation with Jeon So Young in the work, revealed an unexpected aspect of the wings. “When the filming ended, So Young would say to me: “Unnie, shall we have a can of beer today?”. So we would put on sheet masks together in the hotel room while chatting, we became really close”. The problem was that “later, we had become so close that this current of tension no longer came out on set”.
She confided while laughing: “That’s why, when So Young was next to me, I purposely took a little time to stay away”. It is a point that highlights her professional consciousness, moving away from a close actress to maintain the tension of the acting.
