Singer HYOLYN poses for the KIA brand and answers questions from Hypebeast.
SISTAR’s former member is making his way and more and more the US is opening his arms. With its title “Dally” which exceeds 10 million views, the singer receives a lot of love.
Enjoying a moment during a trip Hypebeast took advantage of the moment to interview the singer.
For HYOLYN what does it mean Soul ?
It’s a word that stands out. My favorite music is the R&B. Well, the real thing about Soul? Soul to something real. It’s the soul. There is no need for special explanation.
A year ago you created your own agency and became a solo artist. I guess it was not easy to leave a group that was getting a lot of love and an agency.
I had not prepared anything special to be a soloist. I’m still trying. I learned things when I was a singer. I like to try to change. It’s good to feel more mature when I do things that I do not think I can do. I think it’s a valuable experience to challenge yourself.
Do you often go to Los Angeles? Last year, you did a concert tour in an American club. There is a resemblance between the energy of the club and the healthy image of HYOLYN.
I saw the new world in this club. (Laughing) I’m in a way, shy. Except when I’m on stage. But the concert was not easy because the audience was really close. I had an impression of not being able to breathe enough. It was an intense experience.
There are many people who follow HYOLYN. From singers, rappers, divas to many foreign artists. Which of these names do you prefer?
Artists and divas. I don’t think I’ll just play music that shows my performance or sing a ballad. As a singer, I want to show you various aspects. My goal is to go on tour. And I hope my performances will not be boring. To do that, I think there should be changes or modifications. Although this is a unique performance, my goal is to show a variety of colors, like many singers.
You look like Soul to the extent that it shines in different ways. Anyway, what was your first impression of Soul today?
First of all, it was my favorite color. I heard that the color of Soul is Mars Orange. It’s rare. I think I look like L.A., which I like a lot. In addition, the atmosphere inside is also attractive.
The indoor mood lights can be a total of natural colors, depending on the setting. There are many people who drive Soul who value individuality. That’s why this video is titled.
The lighting and speakers that create the ambience in the cabin also exude a wide variety of sensations. Cars are also the most private places of the driver. Thanks to the lighting, I think I’ll be more excited when I listen to catchy songs. On the other hand, I will change the brightness when I listen to quiet songs.
I thought of two things when I saw HYOLYN solo. Is she trying to be freer by being alone or creating her own label like AOMG and H1GHR Music by Jay Park?
I have had the right to many questions since my independence and each time I answered: “I want to do better and even better as a solo artist” .I do not do the same thing anymore, I’m not obliged to do all the programs and I am therefore less likely. So last November’s solo gig was also an answer to why I wanted to be a solo artist.
Is that why the show was called True?
I was thinking about the reason for my independence, the kind of music I wanted to do, and what I’m going to show you in the future. In the middle of the performance, I showed you a video about the challenges, challenges and growth of the past year. Now, I need a lot more time to prepare for music and activities. In addition, I participate in music, dance, video, visual, I am more involved.
What was the reaction of the fans who were able to attend the performance of HYOLYN in the hall?
It was not just good. I have been doing this for a year. I wanted to show my fans how I changed and what challenges I faced. So, I planned to show you how the song had changed, starting with SISTAR‘s HYOLYN. SISTAR members came to the concert. During the viewing, we cried while watching the video of myself, preparing myself to become a solo artist. Since our separation, we have struggled to find our respective positions.
We could see that HYOLYN has become a new challenger in the MV of “Dally”. There are things you would never have done if you were HYOLYN of SISTAR?
It’s true. There are some parts I would not have done if I had been HYOLYN of SISTAR. But is it difficult to explain? (Laughter) I think it’s because there’s a new challenge.

It’s something very meaningful to me. I participated in almost every aspect of music, performances, costumes, etc. ALICIA JANELL, a dancer I usually watched on Instagram, called the DM and invited her. The way of proceeding was so much fun. So I went to Los Angeles where she was. I sang Dally. “And she created her own dance, there were no stylists, no hairdressers, no makeup artists, so we made it ourselves..
“Dally” is a music that shows excellent collaboration with producer GRAY. Do you want to work with other artists?
I would like to work with other producers with whom there would be a good synergy to develop my own style. Among the Korean musicians, I wish to rework with GRAY and with ZICO. CHRIS BROWN is an American musician. I think CHRIS BROWN is the best performer. He is the musician with whom I want to collaborate the most. Apart from that, FERRELL WILLIAMS and TYGA.
Is there a new HYOLYN song that you will show us in the near future?
There is a song that has not been published. During my concert, I song this song in front of the public and I did not release it. I am so excited about it. I only played my songs to fans who came to see me at that time, not to an open audience. The title is “You know better”.
What kind or character would you like to try?
I think of an ideal diva. The one with a beautiful silhouette that you can see in the movie “Burlesque” or in Broadway musicals. They combine the silhouette of elegant women, superb outfits and grandiose manners. Should I say “Dope”? Even if you get up, you feel charismatic even if you do not ask too much. Like my role here, I do not have to do extravagant dance in front of Soul to clear something.
Thinking back to today’s interview, I think HYOLYN is a rare person who follows what she loves and makes it a great reality. Is it literally “Soulful Vibes Only”? From now on, HYOLYN will follow its own path, for which it can not guess the future, is it?
I would be back with a new color, of course. And I really want to say, I had a big operation in my stomach. When I was a child, I suffered from a rare disease, gallbladder disease and major epilepsy, which resulted in an operation. The tattoo covered the scar. I overcame it, and I hope that children with rare diseases will have more hope. I want to be a good example. I will be in good health.
