We are April 6th in South Korea, so it is the birthday of MINGYU, member of the group SEVENTEEN. This is a large group so I suggest you discover each member in a little more detail through their written portrait.
The member in the spotlight today is MINGYU, the giant rapper and touches everything in the group
MINGYU was born on April 6th, 1997 which means that he is part of the group of male idols born in 1997: called the 97 line and composed of Jungkook (BTS), Jaehyun (NCT), Bambam (GOT7), Yugyeom (GOT7 ), Eunwoo (ASTRO), The8 and DK (Seventeen). They are famous for their friendship and for having created a “group chat”. Some sang together “I’m a flying butterfly” in 2016 alongside female idols born in 1997. To celebrate entering their 20s.
What is striking about MINGYU is that despite his height (1m87) which makes him one of the greatest idols of Kpop, he has a childish character, he is a “nice” but he is also sulky and really awkward. This clumsiness which makes the happiness of the fans fond of the video montages of his falls and other small miseries, also makes him a perfect victim for the other members who gently laugh at him and his small faults.
Besides that, MINGYU is a real jack-of-all-trades who is particularly passionate about photography and cooking. Very greedy by nature, he is a very good cook: we have seen him prepare ramen, turn pizza dough like a pro or prepare revisited burger during shows. MINGYU loves to cook but what he loves even more is eating: he loves to taste new dishes, new cuisines. Food really makes him happy.
He is also a great creative, MINGYU himself designed the mascot of the fans, Bongbong. He considers himself to be his daddy (such as Gepetto and Pinocchio).
His passion for drawing allows him to relax, it is evoked in the Thai drama “Luang ta mahachon” in which he played the role of “Mingyu escaping from his idol life and posing as a designer” in 2017.
He once said he would have liked to study architecture. MINGYU is also very manic, he straddles tidying up and cleaning which has earned him the nickname “handyman of the group” and which makes him the member that everyone else would want to take with them on a trip. !
Like DK, MINGYU is very fond of rock, he is regularly seen wearing American bands t-shirts.
Being very good looking, MINGYU was spotted by Pledis Entertainment recruiters and went through the audition where he simply performed the Korean national anthem while clapping his hands to check he had a sense of rhythm. Coming in flip-flops and without any particular talent for singing, MINGYU still managed to integrate the agency in 2012. During these 3 years, MINGYU will train in rap to be able to begin as a rapper and member of the “hiphop unit ” in the group.
From the group’s launch show, “Seventeen Project”, MINGYU and his handsome physique didn’t fail to crack the fans, he himself played with his appearance as when he went in the audience while ‘he was performing the song “Hello” and he took the signs from the fans (who turned out to be Jeonghan fans).
Among the members of SEVENTEEN, MINGYU is one of the members who have made the most progress since its inception. At the beginning, he was not the most gifted: the members of his team wrote their own rap lyrics and his were often refused because they were not written well enough. But over the years MINGYU became a good rapper and also developed a talent for singing. At present, he is perfecting his singing, since the title “Trauma” in which, for the first time, he didn’t rap, he has more often sung parts and it is moreover no surprise that for his song solo during the “Ideal Cut” concert, MINGYU appeared all dressed in white and sang “Like the beginning” which is a ballad.
Finally MINGYU which is the official visual of the group for obvious reasons was, from February 2018 to October 2019, the presenter of Inkigayo. He seemed really comfortable in this role which is not so surprising since MINGYU the “Swiss Army Knife” is also a graduate of Seoul Broadcasting High School.
